"The Yellow Wallpaper" (original title "The Yellow Wall-paper. A Story") is a 6,000-word short story by the American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman, first published in January 1892 in The New England Magazine. It is regarded as an important early work of American feminist literature, illustrating attitudes in the 19th century toward women's health, both physical and mental.
Plot overview
The story details the descent of the unreliable narrator, possibly named Jane, into madness. Her supportive, though misunderstanding husband, John, believes it is in her best interests to go on a rest cure after the birth of their child. The family spends the summer at a colonial mansion that has, in the narrator's words, "something queer about it". She and her husband move into an upstairs room that she assumes was once a nursery, having it serve as their bedroom due to its multitude of windows, which provide the air so needed in her recovery. In addition to the couple, John's sister Jennie is present; she serves as their housekeeper. Like most nurseries at the time the windows are barred, the wallpaper has been torn, and the floor is scratched. The narrator attributes all these to children, as most of the damage is isolated to their reach. Ultimately, though, the reader is left unsure as to the source of the room's damage.

Years ago when I was talked into joining Speech Team back in high school I remember finding a summary of this story. My teacher warned me that it was a very difficult piece to try and portray, and that was all I needed to hear. I took it and made it my own and won many first places and overall championships with it. It was wonderful to read the background story of the characters and how it evolved. I still don't think I would've changed the way I prsented it back then, though.Product details

So happy I finally read this after it sat on my shelf for so many years. It's basically about the will to act being tricked into being exchanged for the will to contemplate (Et Weekay Wearsa).
I might suggest some items to be read alongside
A quick but very powerful read. This short story offers much to ponder about, with great metaphores and loads of personification.
Not at all what I was expecting but the words and the story came together perfectly. After finishing it I feel like I need to start it all over again.
Thanks.
This is an excellent glimpse into the life and thoughts of a person with a mental disability. It also helps you understand the thinking behind the age old treatment of this disability.
I came across this book in a discussion about female horror writers. Since it was a free from (and still is!), I downloaded it, read it, and it managed to creep me out more in 40 pages than most books do in 300. The Yellow Wallpaper is a psychological horror and it's a little confusing at first, since it is written in first person. As the narrator becomes more and more detached from normalcy, the book's path becomes more clear, and the horror builds.
Incredibly moving and heartbreaking. I just wanted to reach through the book and hug this woman. You feel her pain and misery. She's strong as well. It gives a stark image of those that go through depression or any mental illness. They aren't treated like human beings with feelings and love, but a medical case that should be treated in black in white. This story makes you want to care for your fellow man a little more than what's right on the surface.
